2026 Alberta Summer Provincial Championships Summary

After eleven months of early morning alarms, endless yardage, and bleacher endurance, the 2025-2026 season reached its finale at the Summer Provincial Championships at MNP. Rather than crawling across the finish line, the Patriots summoned one last impressive burst of effort to close out the year. Not even an unexpected mid-meet wave pool experiment, courtesy of pool propulsion jets briefly set to white-water mode, could disrupt the momentum. When the water finally settled, the team capped off the season in grand style, securing national qualifying standards, rewritten club records, and a coveted new Jersey Time.

Within the Patriots tradition, earning a Jersey Time represents a pinnacle achievement, granting a swimmer the right to wear the club jersey on deck in perpetuity. Fourteen-year-oldachieved his inaugural Jersey Time in the 50 Fly, posting a sharp 26.71 seconds. He paired that milestone with a five-medal performance across the weekend, including gold in the 50 Fly, two silvers, two bronzes, and a Youth Recognition honor in the 200 Free.

Seven Patriots secured first-time standards at higher competitive tiers, highlighted by three swimmers punching tickets to Canadian Trials. Fifteen-year-olddelivered a dominant weekend in the breaststroke and freestyle events, capturing five individual gold medals. In the process, he hit his first Canadian Trials standard in the 200 Breaststroke and established new #1 all-time club records in both the 100 Breaststroke and 200 Breaststroke for 15-year-olds.

Joining him on the national qualifying list were eighteen-year-old, who earned her first Canadian Trials cut in the 50 Free while claiming gold in the 100 Free, and sixteen-year-old, who achieved his first Canadian Trials cut in the 200 Backstroke. Szep also touched the wall in 59.86 seconds in the 100 Backstroke to become the newest #1 all-time club record holder in that event and maintained a perfect clean sheet by dropping time in all five of his races.

First-time standards were also earned by fourteen-year-oldin the 200 Backstroke (Westerns), eighteen-year-oldin the 50 Breaststroke (Westerns), twelve-year-oldin the 400 IM (Champs), and thirteen-year-oldin the 200 Fly (Champs). Thompson capped her meet by setting the #1 all-time club record in the 14-year-old 200 Backstroke.

The individual accomplishments ran deep across every age group. Thirteen-year-oldproduced a flawless clean sheet, dropping time in six out of six races, earning Trials cuts in both the 100 Free and 200 Free, and joining the all-time top 10 in the 200 Breaststroke.

Fifteen-year-oldput on a dominant display in the butterfly and freestyle events, taking home three golds in the 50 Fly, 100 Fly, and 400 Free, along with a silver and bronze. Sixteen-year-oldcaptured gold in both the 50 Fly and 100 Free (plus bronze in the 200 Free) while advancing to #3 all-time in the 200 Free. Seventeen-year-oldtook gold in the 200 IM, silver in the 400 Free, and bronze in the 200 Free, also moving to #3 all-time in the 200 Free.

Numerous Patriots made significant moves into the club's all-time rankings. Seventeen-year-oldproduced a winning 50 Breaststroke swim-off performance while writing her name into the top 10 across all three breaststroke events. Fourteen-year-oldearned silver in the 100 Breaststroke and bronze in the 50 Breaststroke, while fourteen-year-oldtook silver in the 50 Breaststroke, with both posting career-best top swims.

Fourteen-year-oldand seventeen-year-oldboth won silver in the 400 IM and established new top 10 record marks. Twelve-year-oldsecured her Westerns cut in the 200 Breaststroke and climbed to #2 all-time, while twelve-year-oldbroke into the top 10 in both backstroke events.

Career-best personal top swims were also delivered by fourteen-year-old, sixteen-year-old, fifteen-year-old, and sixteen-year-old, ensuring that the team's relentless effort paid off across the entire roster.

A campaign this successful is built on far more than fast water. High praise goes to our dedicated coaches for steering the team through months of hard training, our volunteers for staffing the timers' chairs, and our relentless parents for making sure every athlete arrived fed, rested, and ready to race.
