Calgary Patriots Chinooks!

We just wrapped up our third club-hosted meet of the year at the Brookfield YMCA. Shockingly, despite the name of the meet, there was no actual chinook outside. Instead of warm spring winds, we got the standard-issue humid pool air, while the kids busied themselves setting records and ruthlessly clearing out the much-anticipated prize table. Our swimmers posted some seriously fast times, and a few finally secured their first provincial cuts.

Four swimmers earned their first-ever provincial standards at their current age level, officially condemning their parents to yet another weekend of travel. Courtney Middleton picked up a Festival cut in the 50 Fly. Hudson Lowry grabbed his first Festival standard in the 200 Back. Lauren Craig snagged a Trials cut in the 50 Breast, and Tian Ren Shi hit his first Trials standard in the 100 Back. Congratulations to them, and apologies to their families' future weekend plans.

Emiko Wong had a busy weekend. She apparently decided losing was for other people, winning four golds and moving up to #2 all-time in club history for the 14-year-old girls' 100 Fly. Desmond Phillips also had a full schedule, dragging home three golds and three silvers.

Our relay teams evidently synchronized their watches and set four new #1 all-time club records. The 11-year-old girls claimed the top spot in both the 4x50 Free and IM relays, swum by Esme Hockey, Sophia Rippe, Maddyn Rushfeldt, and Audrey Thompson. The 9-year-old boys (Nathaniel Ellens, Cael Coulman, Dashiell Ward, Griffin Maaskant) took #1 in the 4x50 Free.

In a sport where parents regularly spend hundreds of dollars on racing suits and travel just hoping to see a microscopic fraction of a second shaved off a personal best, our kids decided to give everyone a massive return on investment. Lucas Adam swam a brilliant 200 Free, dropping an incredible 24.2%. Ryleigh Killick bypassed incremental progress entirely, putting down a phenomenal swim to carve 18.7% off her 100 Free. Eda Yulek looked fantastic crushing her 200 Back for a 17.2% drop, meaning her parents had 17% less time to nervously hold their breath in the stands. In the 50 Fly, both Alexander Asikainen-Tarkkanen (17.2%) and Andella Zembiak (16.6%) flew down the pool, knocking huge chunks off their times. Incredible job to the athletes for proving all those 5:00 AM alarms are actually worth it.

The meet featured the 50 Free Eliminator, a delightfully cruel format where the fastest eight swimmers race repeatedly until the bottom two are knocked out each round. Sophia Rippe and Audrey Thompson survived to the final four for the 12 & Under girls, presumably running on sheer adrenaline. Desmond Phillips and Everett White-O'Neil stubbornly did the same for the boys. In the 13 & Over category, Jocelin Zhu cracked the top four for the girls. Gibson Hurd, Ivan Ramirez Amador, and Zack Schwanke clung to the final four for the older boys.

Thank you to all the volunteers. You studied the rulebooks, sat through the officiating courses, completed your shadow shifts, and got fully qualified. And your grand prize for all this hard work? A 6-hour shift standing on wet tiles in a chlorinated sauna. Thank you for persevering through the weekend for the sake of the kids and the club. You are the only reason this whole operation stays afloat.
