2026 Mel Zajac Jr. International
Meet Summary
A fast weekend in Vancouver
The Mel Zajac Jr. International is a major fixture of the summer long-course season, drawing national team athletes and top-tier clubs to UBC. For our silver and gold squads, qualifying to race here was a significant achievement. While we didn't bring home individual medals, the Patriots still made a serious dent in the club's all-time record books.
Hudson Blough climbs the breaststroke ranks
Hudson Blough had a standout meet in the breaststroke events. The 17-year-old climbed to #2 all-time in the club in both the 100 Breaststroke (1:08.32) and the 200 Breaststroke (2:29.56). He also added a #4 all-time rank in the 50 Breaststroke (31.53), rewriting a large portion of the club's breaststroke records in a single weekend.
Improving the backstroke lists
We also saw fast swims in the backstroke. Scarlett Herget swam a 1:07.73 in the 100 Backstroke to move up to #8 all-time. In the 15-year-old category, William Cameron dropped his 100 Backstroke time to 1:02.91, taking the #4 spot in club history.
Relays claim the number two spots
Our relay teams put together two of the fastest swims in club history. In the 17-and-under age group, the 4x100 Freestyle relay team of William Cameron, Samuel Bygrave, Federico Martino, and Szilard Szep swam a 3:40.52, claiming the #2 spot all-time. The 4x100 Medley relay team of Szilard Szep, Hudson Blough, William Cameron, and Federico Martino also took the #2 spot all-time, finishing in 4:05.81.
The bottom line
Elite meets like the Mel Zajac Jr. show our swimmers exactly what it takes to compete at the next level.
