Strong Showing for Patriots at Summer Provincial Trials

July 1, 2025

This past weekend, 21 Calgary Patriots swimmers took to the pool at the Summer Provincial Trials in Medicine Hat—and they made waves.

Over the course of the meet, our swimmers racked up an impressive 59 personal bests and brought home 21 podium finishes, including 8 gold, 5 silver, and 8 bronze medals. Leading the way was Jocelin Zhu, who stood on the podium four times, followed by Lauren Matiakis and Madden Murray, each with three podium finishes. Tomas Arroyo Olivera and Megan Sauder both secured two medals, while Kira Barber, Miia Sikorska, Ege Tutkuner, and Ava Virag also contributed to the team’s medal count with strong performances.

The Patriots' relay teams also delivered exceptional results. The Girls 14 & Under 200m Freestyle Relay team of Kira Barber, Miia Sikorska, Lily Avery, and Jocelin Zhu struck gold, while the Girls 14 & Under 200m Medley Relay team of Jocelin Zhu, Maya Gruszka, Miia Sikorska, and Kira Barber earned bronze. Not to be outdone, the Boys 14 & Under 200m Medley Relay team of Evan Ying, Madden Murray, Ege Tutkuner, and Everett White-Oneil also landed on the podium, capturing bronze.

A special congratulations goes out to the swimmers who qualified for the Summer Provincial Championship: Jocelin Zhu, Lauren Matiakis, Madden Murray, Tomas Arroyo Olivera, Megan Sauder, and Kira Barber. Madden achieved this by hitting the 13-year-old qualifying standard in the 50m breaststroke, while the others earned their spots by winning events.

Congratulations to all our swimmers on a fantastic showing, and good luck to those advancing to the Provincial Championships!
